Merry Christmas

Families of Room 31 ~

Just sending a little message to let you know that I’m thinking of all of my families this Christmas morning.  As I watch this beautiful snow fall, George (my cat) is on my lap and Gracie (George’s sister) on my shoulder keeping me snuggly warm.  From my family to yours…..

May your home be filled with the joy of family and friends this holiday season.

Looking forward to a wonderful 2018 with my students!

Warmly ~

December Update

Families of Room 31 ~

It is hard to believe that we are in our final week before our December break.  I know many families are enjoying some family / holiday time together in the days / weeks to come.  I hope you all find some well deserved relaxation/.
Trimester 1 has officially closed and report cards come home today with your child.      It is important for you to review these grades with your child celebrating their successes and setting goals in areas for improvement.  Having a growth mindset has been a topic of conversation in fourth grade this year.  It is important for students to understand that hard work and persistence can help any of us achieve whatever we put our mind to.
Please know that their report card should stay home, yet the envelope needs to be signed and returned to school.  Please reach out if you have any questions / concerns.
On another note, a concert form from our music teacher come home today.  Although the due date is January 5th, we discussed that it would be best / easier if the students were to return it to school this week.
Lastly, our SNOWFLAKE FESTIVAL is this Friday morning.  As of this point I have 3 parents confirmed to assist.  It would be great if a few more were able to assist.  If you believe you are available between 9:15 and 11:15, please let me know.

Wishing everyone Happy Holidays and a restful, healthy December break!

GINGERBREAD SHOP

Just a reminder that the Gingerbread Shop is this Friday, December 8th.
This year the shop will be only a ONE DAY sale.  Any student who wants to shop and who brings in money, may shop. For those new to Coolidge,  the Gingerbread Shop is an opportunity for students to purchase inexpensive gifts during the school day to give to their family members and friends. Envelopes were sent home last week for the students to use.  (You can still shop without the envelope!)  The class will have a PREVIEW of the shop at some point on Thursday.  IF you have not done so already, and you would like your child to shop on Friday, please make sure they have their money in an envelope and at school by Friday.

Book Orders
If you are planning on placing a book order, the orders are due by this FRIDAY, December 8th.  I will be placing the order Saturday morning. The turn around is quick as I want to make sure the orders are in by the winter break.  IF you need special arrangements for pick up, let me know.

Greateful

Families of Room 31 ~

On this glorious day, I am taking a few moments to to reflect on how grateful I am that I have such a wonderful group of students to work with each day.  I’m enormously grateful for my students, as well as their family.   My students laugh at my horrible jokes or my singing.  They put their faith in my instruction and requirements.
Yet truly, I’m grateful for the way students inspire me to be a better teacher each and every day.   I’m grateful for the relationship we've built and for the memories we share, and for those moments when they finally “get it” – whatever “it” is – and allow me a front row seat to their joy.  I must say, I have a job I look forward to going to each and every day.

Wishing you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving.

WATER/ SHAMPOO / PARENT -STUDENT CONFERENCES

Families of Room 31 ~
It's hard to believe it is already November.  I wish I had a magic wand and could slow down this school year!  There are a few important reminders to share:

2.  PARENT / STUDENT CONFERENCES -  Many of our parent / student conferences have begun.  Your child is going to be actively involved in our discussions.  Each conferences will be approximately 40 minutes in length.  If you and your child are meeting on Thursday, Nov. 9th, it will be important that we stick to our time-lines as the day is full with back to back conferences.  I look forward to meeting with everyone.

3.  NO SCHOOL - There is NO SCHOOL on Thursday, November 9th due to Parent / Student Conferences.  Also, there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, November 10th in honor of Veteran's Day.

5.  HALLOWEEN CANDY - Halloween Candy will be collected in the front lobby until November 13th!

As always, thanks for your continued support.  Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Parent / Student Conference

Good Evening  -

On Monday, I will be sending home reminders for the upcoming parent / student conferences.  Due to the length of each conference (40 minutes), I am not able to accommodate everyone on parent conference day.  This means that many of our student / parent conferences start this week.  Attached to your personal reminder will be a parent reflection forms.  I would appreciate you taking the time and filling the reflection form out out.  This will help our conference run much smoother and keep us focused on topics you want to see addressed.

For those of you whom may want to type your responses, I am attaching the form to this email.  For most of you, it is due by this Friday, November 3rd.

Preconference Form

Looking forward to talking to everyone.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Families of Room 31 ~

Friday was an AMAZING day in Room 31.  Fifteen students demonstrated poise and leadership when they took the risk of sharing their desire to run for student council.  The speeches were OUTSTANDING which resulted in a very close election.  In the end, the class did elect Natalie, Haylee and Drew to be our class representatives.  What struck me the most was the "sportsmanship" I listened to unfold before my eyes and ears.  Words such as "Good Luck", "You've got this!", "You can do it!"  "Way to go!" and "Congratulations" where shared within these walls.  There is no greater feelings a teacher can have than to witness this for themselves.    Although it was bittersweet for many, we did talk about the risk taking, the desire for leadership opportunities and the experience they all gained from this experience.      There are MANY future leaders in this classroom  ready to take action!

I want to thank all the students for being brave and writing such thoughtful speeches.  I look forward to finding leadership opportunities for all the students this year.  I send my heartfelt congratulations to Natalie, Haylee and Drew.

School Photos / Student Council

Families of Room 31~

~ Just a quick reminder that THURSDAY (today), September 28th is School Picture Day!

Student Council Elections - As long as every student is in class on Friday, we will hold our student council elections.  Many students brought home a copy of the speech they wrote in class on Wednesday.  Although every student needed to write the written piece, only those who choose to read the speech aloud will do so on Friday.   Each homeroom will select 3 members to represent their class.

~ NO SCHOOL - There will be no school for students on Friday, October 6th as it is a Professional Development Day for staff.  Also, Monday October 9th is Columbus Day.  There will be no school.

~Lastly, I am reaching out to families who were unable to attend Curriculum Night and sign up for a parent conference.  As a reminder, conferences will be 40 minutes and your child is asked to attend.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns / questions.

Thanks for your continued support.

Curriculum Night / Media

Families of Room 31~

Just a few reminders:

1.  Media is on Tuesday.  Each media session the children may check out TWO books.  One book must be appropriate to the student's reading level and I usually approve the choice.  The second book is a book of choice.  We have had many discussion about "quality literature" recently.  Our goal is that hte students throughout the year try various genres and authors.

2.  CURRICULUM NIGHT - Tuesday, September 19th at 6:30.  I hope to see everyone Tuesday night.  I will be reviewing the 4th grade curriculum and expectations as well as some of the routines of our classroom.  There will also be a sign up for parent conferences.  Although we have ONE parent conference day on Thursday, Nov. 9th, I will be holding conferences on alternative dates also.  I want the students to join us for the conference so, it takes longer than the standard 15 minutes speed version.  Many of the alternative dates will be before school / after school.  Fee free to sign up at one of the few slots on conference day or choose an alternative date / time.  Just make sure if is a time / day that both you and your child is able to attend.

3.  THANK YOU - I'd like to reach out and think our families for their generous contribution of hand sanitizer / cash for the Hurricane Harvy victims.  The school in general boxed up six full boxes of supplies and raised close to $400.  What a great reinforcer for the students to actively live - "Helping Others!"

Looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow night!

Great First Week!

Families of Room 31!
I'm just reaching out to let you know what an ENJOYABLE first week we have had on the third floor!  I am so proud of the students perseverance and effort.  We have spend a bit of time getting to know each other, practicing and modeling our routines in many areas, and talking about the importance of being "present" in the moment.    The students gave terrific effort on there baseline assessments in math and writing.    Next week, we will being our focus in reading while they being their DRA's.  I feel very fortunate to be their teacher!  REMEMBER - there is NO SCHOOL FRIDAY or MONDAY!

Just a reminder that the students need to work on a few items for next week. (Directions were send home in their homework folder on Wednesday)

1.  WRITER'S NOTEBOOKS - DUE BY FRIDAY SEPT. 8th
These  notebooks were sent home this week for the students to DECORATE with items / photos that are meaningful to them.  These items / photos can and will be inspiration for future writing assignments.  Please make sure they are covering only one side (WRITER'S NOTEBOOK side - not the VOCABULARY side) with these personal items / photos/ drawings.
***  On another note, if you have any laminating / packing tape at home, it would be helpful if you could cover their pictures with these when they are finished.  If not, I will take care of this when they pass them in.

2.  ALL ABOUT ME BAGS / ITEMS - DUE BY WEDNESDAY SEPT. 6th
White bags were sent home on Wednesday for the students to finish personalizing / decorating about themselves.  They are to fill the bag with 3 - 5 items to use to help introduce themselves to their classmates.  Please make sure the items chosen fit in the bag and can stay in school for a week or more.

I hope you and your family enjoy this long holiday weekend.    Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions / concerns.

FIrst Day - SUCCESS

Families of Room 31!!

What a wonderful first day we all experienced!!!   I was so excited to have my room filled with eager and excited students!

We spent some time unpacking and labeling our supplies.   Some supplies  -  the extras we did not ask for, were sent home (or to be kept in their backpacks) as we don’t have room to store them in our small buckets.

Today the children will come home with their planners and homework folders. The homework folder and planner are to travel between home and school on a daily basis.   In their homework folder are TWO forms that need to be signed and returned.

            •  Nature Trail Form
            •  Bullying Pledge

Please review these forms tonight and send them back with your child in the morning.   I also ask that you:
            •  send your child to school each day with a WATER BOTTLE and SNACK.  Remember to be allergy aware!

            •  sign your child’s planner EVERY NIGHT!!

Please clean out the blue communication folder and send it back to school tomorrow!

Tomorrow the students will have CHORUS.   Our PE class will be on MONDAY.
Just a reminder - Friday is a day off for students as teachers attend a professional development training.

I look forward to a GREAT YEAR!   Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Get Ready for our First Day!

Good Evening!

I hope that everyone  enjoyed their last day of summer.  It is hard to believe that tomorrow is our first day together!    I am really looking forward to working with your child this year!

I would like to let you know a few of important items before sending your child to school tomorrow:

1. Please send your child with a NUT FREE  snack and a water bottle EVERYDAY. See the information below for more information from Mrs. Zimmerman regarding snacks.   Our lunch is at 1:05 so it is important for the children to "refuel" mid morning!

2.  We will start our day with music class at 9:15 so it will be important for everyone to arrive on time.

3.  If possible, please send your child to school this week with a pleasure book to read.  Our classroom library will be opening up by early next week and they will have the opportunity to choose from our library one we are up and running.

4.  The children will be coming home with a homework folder / planner everyday.  Please make sure they share this with you.  I will make every attempt to initial the planner each day.  I ask that they get in the habit of showing your their completed assignments and that an adult initials or signs the planner at home every night.

I'm looking forward to a great school year and working as a team to support your child.  Please feel free to email me at any time with questions or concerns.

Best -

Welcome to Fourth Grade

Welcome to 4th Grade!!!

I am looking forward to meeting the students Tuesday, August  29th.    The summer went by fast, but for the past month, I know I was ready for the school year to begin!   (I don’t do well with idle time!)   The room is just about set and I know we are ready to begin!

Knowing that the transition back to the structure of the school day can be difficult for some, the first week back to school we will focus on many areas that will help to structure our return.   Along with some informal assessments in various subjects, we will be spending a good amount of time participating in classroom community building activities and establishing class expectations.

On the first or second day of school your child will be coming home with a “bag” to fill with 3 or 4 items.    They are going to use this bag to introduce themselves to their classmates while we practice our questioning techniques.   I will model this for them the first few days of school to introduce myself.  In the summer letter I sent home, I shared that they would need to bring in some items that would tell us a little about themselves, their family or their interests.  (Ex. – a baseball card might represent that they collect baseball cards or that they like to play baseball.)    We will be sharing the contents of the bags the first few weeks of school and may use the contents for a writing exercise.

The students will also be coming home the first day with their homework planner and homework folder.   This planner will be where they will record their daily / weekly or long term assignments.   I make every attempt to have myself or another adult initial the assignment so I know it is correct.   I would like your child to show you their planner every night, have you initial / sign it, and bring them back to school the following day.   They will need to do this everyday throughout the school year.   Starting this on the first day helps to establish the routine we are working towards.

I also wanted you to know that I often use “all parent” emails and personal emails as a means of communication.    Please feel free to contact me at any time, either through email, written notes and / or phone calls.   I will get back to you as soon as possible.   I value home/school communication and feel that it is crucial to the success of the students.  I strongly believe that we are a team - parents, students, and myself, and it will be important that we all work together and keep the lines of communication open.    I am hoping that the email address I have for everyone is correct.   I would appreciate it if you would send a quick reply to this email, even if you just write  “Got it!” so I know that you have received it.   Please make sure you have logged into POWERSCHOOL and updated any / all information necessary.

I am attaching my summer letter in case any of you did not receive it and / or misplaced it.  It includes a copy of the supply list and gives more in depth information about the summer reading / math expectations.  Also, I do plan on being at the Open House on Thursday, August 24th.  I have to leave by 6:15 but feel free to stop in between 5:00 and 6:00 if you attend.

Lastly, don’t forget to send your child to school the first day with their summer reading and math calendars, a healthy snack (lunch is at 1:05 this year!!!),  a pleasure book to read and a water bottle!

I look forward to meeting everyone soon!

Fondly,

Miss Finneran

End of Year Update

Families of Room 31 ~

The end of year can get very hectic.  A few important reminders:

1.  WATER BOTTLES - Please send your child to school with a water bottle or two for at least Monday and Tuesday.   Due to  the fire hose use during Field Day, the water at Coolidge School is brown.  They can not drink from the water fountains.  Truly, I recommend that they bring a water bottle EVERYDAY!

2.  BACKPACKS -  This week, many of your child's supplies / belongings will be sent home.  Please make sure your child's backpack is cleaned / cleared out EVERY DAY so there is room the following day for more supplies.

3.  COMPLETION / MEDAL CEREMONY - the Completion Ceremony is Monday June 19th at 9:30.  Please send your child to school dresses for this special occasion.  They may bring a change of clothes to change into for the remainder of the day.    I am super proud to share that EVERY STUDENT in our class will be receiving GOLD medals at the ceremony.  The medal's have change this year to represent effort in both reading and math.  Every student completed all assigned work!  Congratulations!

For planning purposes, the ceremony begins at 9:30 in the gym and lasts about 1 1/2 hours.

4.  FOURTH GRADE T-SHIRTS - Students will be receiving their 4th grade T-shirts on the 19th after the ceremony.  We ask that they wear them to school on our final day - June 20th.

1.  REPORT CARDS are being sent home on Monday.  Please KEEP the paper report card and send back the signed envelope with your child
on Tuesday.

2.  SOCIAL STUDIES TEST – Wednesday, April 12th.  Your child brought home their social studies text book and a study packet on Friday.  They will take a test on the MIDWEST – physical features, climate, economy and natural resources.  Please make sure they are reviewing for this test a little each night.  Text books are to be returned on April 12th.

Happy Spring!

Happy Spring!

Although I am a winter lover, I'll be happy when this snow melts and the grass turns a bright green!   Here's hoping for warmer days!  Just a few reminders / updates for this week.

1.  SPRING FLING - the PTO does a great job supporting the students in many ways (has your child talk you about the author (Gordon Korman) who recently visited us due to the PTO!  One of it's largest fundraisers is the SPRING FLING where each student is asked to either bring in an item for their class basket or make a $5.00 donation to the basket and the shopping will be done for you!  Our basket is a SPORTS BASKET.   Thanks to those 10 families that have already make their contribution!  The due date is this FRIDAY, MARCH 24th!

2.  VOCABULARY REVIEW - This week the students will be bringing home a review list of the works from lists 1 - 10.  There will be a review quiz this Friday.  They will have homework to help them prepare / review.  A review choice homework paper is being sent home today.  Students are to choose TWO activities to complete this week.  One will be due on WEDNESDAY and the other on FRIDAY.  Please make sure they keep the vocabulary work / definition list at home as well as the choice homework paper.

3. MCAS - As I have shared on date  section of our blog, the students will be taking the MCAS tests.  ELA will be in April (13th, 25th and 27th) and MATH will be in May (15th / 17th).  I am attaching a link for you to see some of what the test will be like.  We will be using these passages in school during the upcoming weeks to practice test taking strategies.  Truly, the students work throughout their school has helped them prepare for the upcoming test.   Our goal to to have them feel comfortable with the technology aspect of the testing as using the technology for testing will be a first for them (as well as us - the staff!)

2. COMPLETION CEREMONY:  Completion Ceremony money ($10) is due by Friday, March 10th.  Contributions help to fund the 4th grade t-shirts,  an ice cream party,  yearbooks, and a CD slideshow of the 2016-2017 school year.

3.  YANKEE CANDLE FUNDRAISER: - all orders need to be placed and order sheets with payments be returned to school by Monday March 13th. Orders are scheduled to be delivered and distributed during the Coolidge's Spring Fling event on April 7th.

SNOW DAY UPDATE

Families of Room 31 ~

Well... looks like Mother Nature has taken revenge on us this past week.  Given that today is another snow day, I wanted to remind you of a few important items.

1.  SOCIAL STUDIES TEST on WEDNESDAY.  The student's should have their study guide and text book home to be reviewing for the test.  The cover sheet of the study papers shares what the test expectations will be and also includes pages of the text book that the students can read for review. Please email me if you have any questions.

2.  VALENTINE'S DAY - On Tuesday, we will take some time to celebrate Valentine's Day as a class.  Last week, I sent home a class list with the students' names.  If your child is choosing to hand our valentines, they must distribute valentines to every classmate.  Also, please remember that students may not pass out Valentines that are food related.  Your child may being in an extra snack to enjoy while we open our cards.

3.  FOOD DRIVE -  Thank you to those families who have helped contribute to our food drive.  Our class has surpassed the goal of 100 items. Thus far, we have brought in 162 food items.  The class established a new goal of reaching 200 items.  The final day to bring in items is Wednesday, February 15th.  If we work together, I'm sure we can reach our goal!

Stay warm!

Week of February 6th UPDATE

1.  TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7th is a 1/2 day.  Dismissal is at 12:15.

2.  CANNED / BOXED FOOD DRIVE UPDATE - Thanks to all those families that have generously donated to our canned food drive.  This far, our classroom is in the lead surpassing our goal of 100 cans!  As of today, our classroom has brought in  137 canned / boxed food items for the Worcester County Food Bank! WOW!  We will be setting a new goal tomorrow and see if we can reach that!  Thank your for your generous support in this school endeavor.

3.  SOCIAL STUDIES TEST - Last week the student brought home a study guide / notes and their social studies text book.  We are having a text on the SOUTH (climate / physical features / natural resources and economy) on Wednesday, February 15th.  I have encouraged the students to review for 10 minutes each day!  This should help prevent "Cramming" at the last minute.  We will also be reviewing in class, yet they will NOT need their materials.  Keep the book at home until he day of the test!  Thank for you your support in reminding your child to study / review every night.

4. VALENTINES - In the blue communication folder, a class list was sent home.  We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Tuesday February 14th.  If your child chooses to hand out Valentines, they must have a Valentine for every student in the class.  Please do not purchase / send in any Valentines that include food / candy!  Your child may bring in an extra snack this day to enjoy while we are opening our Valentines.

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions / concerns.

MATH NIGHT - Thursday, January 26th

This coming Thursday, January 26 at 7–8:15pm, school will be open late! All are welcome at Coolidge Math Night, a family-friendly event designed to help your child show off and practice Math skills.

In fourth grade, students will have the opportunity to visit four math stations.  Two stations are based on our fraction unit, one is a problem solving station, and  the fourth is an iPad station.   Students will be demonstrating their bar modeling skill, playing games and exploring the use of technology while highlighting our fourth grade curriculum.

This is a lighthearted, informal event—an opportunity to get familiar with the Math In Focus program, to try some student tools and and to see your child in action!

Hope to see many familiar faces!

MATH HOMEWORK UPDATE/ MAP TEST / MATH NIGHT

Families of room 31 -

OOPS... the class left today and we forgot to write in the planner that the math homework is ONLY questions 1 - 14.  They are NOT to complete 15 - 27 tonight!  Please remind your child if you see this BEFORE they start their homework.  I have also emailed this information to families.

MATH NIGHT - I hope to see many of our students for Math Night on January 26th. Children and their caregivers are encouraged to come play math games / share in our math learning.  It will run from 7:00 - 8:15. Hope to see many familiar faces!

SOUTH STATE MAP TEST - The students have their SOUTH MAP test this THURSDAY, January 19th. They need to be able to label all the physical features (mountains, rivers, oceans, peninsula, delta) in the correct spot on a map.  They will also need to know the names of each of the states.   Learning the capitals are a bonus!   The study guide and practice blank maps went home last Monday which gave the students 10 nights to practice! Please make sure your child is studying for this test!
